Year In Review
Hello Again to All,
This is Coach Stern from Football Done Right. Wow! I cannot believe that the season went by so fast and it is again the off-season. Just to fill you all in, it has been a whirlwind for me over the last year and I am ready for some R & R before my team begins our training camp for 2010. Much has happened since the last time that I have posted on this site and I would like to take this opportunity to fill you all in on what has been happening with me. In June 2009, I resigned my position as Defensive Line Coach at Grossmont College to take the position as Defensive Coordinator at St. Augustine High School in San Diego, CA.
I spent the last 2 off-seasons coaching at the Saints Speed and Strength (SSS) camp that is the largest Speed and Strength camp on the West Coast with over 500 athletes in various sports. Coaching at the SSS camp was a great experience and I look forward to sharing more information about what I learned and examples of the workouts that we administered at the camp in the following weeks. Many of the exercises that our athletes performed are video logged in Football Done Right’s Functional Training Video Series available here. At St. Augustine I learned and implemented the 30 Double Flex Defense and we had much success with it. The 30 Flex Defense has been used by many colleges around the nation, most notably by Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona Wildcats. The 30 Flex Defense is a variation of the 3-3-5 defense that creates match-up problems at the Line of Scrimmage with a variety of coverage and blitz package options. I look forward to sharing my experiences with the 30 Flex with you all in the following weeks.
The St. Augustine Saints finished 9-4 overall with our final defeat coming at the hands of the 2008 State Champion Cathedral Catholic Dons in the CIF Division III Playoff Semi-Finals. It was very heartbreaking, but I am proud of the fact that my kids fought hard throughout the season. I look forward to this off-season of re-tooling with St. Augustine as we look towards a championship season in 2010.
If anyone would like to share their year in review of their teams I would like to be in contact. If anyone would like to discuss the 30 Flex Defense or share any information with me or from me about coaching techniques please email me. I will be updating Football Done Right with new information throughout the off-season and would like to be in contact with as many coaches as possible.
I have posted over 50 videos on Speed and Agility, Strength and Conditioning on Football Done Right so please feel free to seek out and inquire about obtaining our video series. I will be posting more information on and about the SSS camp in San Diego, CA soon and if anyone is interested in attending the SSS camp please let me know.
I look forward to continuing the growth of Football Done Right and partnering with other coaches to provide the best in quality coaching instruction. Thank you all for you continued support.
Sincerely,
Coach Matt Stern

Hi Coach Stern,
Great to have you stop by to visit Escondido Charter High School football practice. We practive your video techniques and remember the on-the-ground advice you gave us. We look forward to hosting Coach Stern’s football technique/strategy workshops, camps, etc.
Question. When we chuck the tight end to prevent a free release, what exactly is the technique? Our objective is to throw him off-stride and disrupt his pass pattern or blocking assignment, not to prevent his departure from the LOS.

Coach Rea,
I teach my Defensive Ends to use the “Blast” Technique. In which the Defensive End blasts through the Tight End both preventing the “Free Release” and disrupting his blocking technique. This technique used will also provide the LB who will be covering the TE underneath the Safety coverage to be in better position if the TE leaves the LOS.
I hope that this helps. Please email me with any further questions.
I look forward to visiting with you and your staff/players again very soon.
Good Luck this season!!
